Dairy Cow Culling Ticks Up in September [VIDEO]
Dairy cow culling was up, but just barely, in September with 500 more cows going to slaughter than in August. Compared to a year ago, however, culling was down more than 6,000 head.
Part of the difference, however, can be attributed to the number of working days in each month. September of 2015 and 2016 each had 21 days to kill cows; August 2016 had 23.
So on a daily basis, September 2016 was actually up 1,036 head per day, or 9.7%, compared to August. But September 2016 compared to a year ago was down 2.7%.
Year-to-date, culling is running about 20,000 head less than last year. That’s a decline of 0.9%. Read the entire livestock report here.
