3 Keys to Maximize the ROI of Your Dairy’s Workforce

On a recent episode of the Uplevel Dairy Podcast, I sat down with Dr. Robert Hagevoort from New Mexico State University, who has delved into this area extensively, particularly looking at how some of the best dairies in the Southwest optimize the efforts and outcomes of their workforce, without additional financial output.
1. Recognizing the Diversity of the Workforce
A critical aspect, Hagevoort points out, of getting the most out your workforce is being inquisitive and learning about them. His work has revealed a shifting demographic in the workforce, as it is increasingly made up of Central Americans, differing from the predominantly Mexican workforce of two decades ago.
This shift brings about a new complexity, particularly with ergonomics, language and culture. Often, these workers speak various indigenous languages, not simply Spanish, creating a new challenge in terms of communication within the workforce.
2. Enhancing Employee Engagement
This diversity, combined with the physically demanding nature of the job, has led to high rates of turnover in the dairy industry. However, to counter this and promote retention, dairies need to focus on understanding the needs of their workers.
For instance, there could be barriers related to location and transportation, language and communication, healthcare, or simply providing meals for staff. Each dairy will have its own unique set of challenges that need to be identified and addressed.
By meeting the workers at their point of need, providing solutions, and treating them as individuals rather than mere staff members, dairies can improve employee motivation and engagement, ultimately leading to higher productivity and reduced turnover.

Recognizing the unique strengths and skills each worker brings and placing them in roles they are best suited for is instrumental in boosting performance levels and job satisfaction.
