2018 MPP Sign-Up Deadline is December 15
For those dairy farmers wishing to participate in the 2018 Dairy Margin Protection Program, deadline for enrollment is next Friday, December 15.
This year, dairy farmers have the option of opting out of the MPP and signing up for Livestock Gross Margin-Dairy insurance. (For a good discussion of the options, read Robin Schmahl’s blog here.) They can also forego both government programs.
Unlike prior years, enrollment in MPP is not automatic if farmers had participated previously. So even if farmers want to participate at the $4 catastrophic level, they must re-enroll and pay the $100 administrative fee by the Dec. 15 deadline.
The United States Department of Agriculture also released its October MPP milk-feed calculation this week at $10/cwt. Averaged with the September milk-feed margin of $9.99, the MPP margin for September/October is essentially $10. The MPP margin has not been below $8 since May/June of 2016.
The October milk-feed margin was based on $3.26/bu corn, $152/ton hay and $315/ton soybean meal. The October All-Milk price came in at $17.90.
