August Milk Production Up 2%--Again

The United States Department of Agriculture reported today that August milk production was again up 2%, the second consecutive month of 2% jumps. Cow numbers remain unchanged from July, at 9.4 million head, but up 71,000 head from a year ago.

California, however, continued its backward slide, reporting milk production down 0.7% in August compared to a year ago, and cow numbers down 13,000 head.

The biggest gainer, in terms of percentage increase, was Utah, up 10.2%, with cow numbers up 6,000 (6.7%). Texas also reported strong milk gains, with milk up 9.2% and cow numbers up 30,000 head, or 6.2%.

Wisconsin was up 1.8% with cow numbers unchanged. Minnesota had a strong month as well, up 4% even though cow numbers there declined 4,000 head.
