California Federal Order Passes

 |  By: Jim Dickrell

California Dairies, Inc., Dairy Farmers of America and Land O’Lakes all block voted to approve the proposed Federal Order in California. The three co-ops made the announcement Monday in a press release. The voting ended Saturday, May 5, and USDA must still tabulate and announce official results.

“Since collectively these three cooperatives represent 75% of the producers in California, it is safe to say that the election passed and California will become the 11th Federal Milk Marketing Order in the United States,” says Geoff Vanden Heuvel, California Milk Producer Council  member and economics consultant. A two-thirds majority was needed to approve the Order.

Vanden Heuvel notes that USDA has committed to a November 1, 2018 start date for the California Order if it were approved.
