CNN Explores Farmers Tortured Relationship With President Trump
CNN published a long, exhaustive piece today on farmers’ attitudes toward President Trump as tariffs and the trade war with China drags on.
CNN reporters talked to some 50 farmers and ag business people covering dairy, pork, soybeans, wheat and citrus in Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, Kansas and California.
Dean Strauss, a Sheboygan County, Wis., dairy farmer who milks 900 cows with his family, was the representative dairy farmer. While Strauss did not say whom he voted for in the 2016 election, he told CNN that President Trump should be given time to fix the trade problem.
“It has been a lot of years in the making, and sometimes you just got to scale things back,” Strauss told CNN. “Let’s start to look at the base and start to take care of the American people.”
But Jeff Schwager, president of Sartori Cheese, Plymouth, Wis. seemed less patient. “What was a profitable business for us is now not profitable, maybe break even at best, and it is a matter of how long can you go on doing that,” he told CNN. Sartori buys milk from Strauss and about 135 other local dairy farmers.
