Dairy Cow Culling Picks Up Momentum
The United States Department of Agriculture reports this week that dairy cattle slaughter seems to be picking up momentum.
Although the total number of cattle moving through federally inspected plants in July was about 11,000 fewer compared to June, there were just 20 working days in July compared to 22 working days in June. As a result, culling per day was actually up 530 head, or about five percent.
Culling is also up 5.9% in July 2017 compared to July 2016. And year to date, some 1.72 million head have been culled. That’s up 3.5%.
