Is Dairy Cow Culling Slowing?

 |  By: Jim Dickrell

Dairy farmers shipped 286,000 cows to federally inspected slaughter plants in October, 30,000 more head than in September.

Keep in mind, though, that October had three more business days than September. On a daily basis, dairy farmers shipped about 350 less cows in October than in September, down 2.7%. This is also somewhat reflective of cow numbers reported in the October milk production report, which estimates cows numbers to be up 5,000 head over September.

Compared to a year ago, though, October culling was up 2,100 head, or 0.7%. And year-to-date, culling is running 79,000 head higher, or 3%.
