Dairy Cow Culling Speeds Up in August

 |  By: Jim Dickrell

Dairy cow culling picked up speed in August, with culling up 8.7% over a year ago. August 2017 culling was also up 2.4% over July.

Nearly 266,000 dairy cows were sent to slaughter in federally inspected plants in August, reports the United States Department of Agriculture this week. Some 226,000 were sent to slaughter in July, and about 245,000 were sent in August 2016.  Nearly 80,000 more cows, or 4.2%, have been sent to slaughter year-to-date.

The percentages above were calculated on a business day basis, since there were 23 working days in both August 2016 and 2017, but just 20 business days in July.
