Dairy Cow Slaughter Still Running Ahead of Last Year
Dairy farmers sent 268,500 dairy cows through federally inspected slaughter plants in April, a jump of nearly 20,000 head over last year, reports the United States Department of Agriculture.
However, because April 2018 had one more business day than April of this year, the kill rate per day was just 3% higher than a year ago.
April culling did slow compared to March of this year. In March 2019, dairy farmers sent 302,400 head to slaughter. On a daily basis, that was 15% more than they sent this April.
