Dairy Farmers of America, Largest Milk Processor in the World
Dairy research firm, IFCN, recently released its biannual list of the top 20 dairy processors in the world. The report indicates currently five of those 20 spots belong to U.S. based dairy companies: topping the list, Dairy Farmers of America (DFA). According to the report, the top 20 processors represent more than 25% of the world’s milk supply.
DFA procures the most milk, processing nearly 30 million tons milk equivalent (ME) each year. New to the list from the U.S. is a company called Schreiber Foods which barely made the cut at 4.5 million tons ME. Other U.S. firms that made the list include Dean Foods, California Dairies and Land O’Lakes.
There’s clearly a large spread between the top two processors on the list, DFA and New Zealand’s Fonterra, and the bottom of the list. Together, DFA and Fonterra process 50.2 million tons ME while the lowest 10 processors on the list collectively only process 68 million tons ME.
While a U.S. processor claimed the top spot on the list, countries belonging to the European Union represent the most milk with more 88 million tons ME.
