Dairy Margin Coverage Program One Step Closer To Implementation

 |  By: Anna-Lisa Laca

USDA is one step closer to meeting their enrollment goal of June 17 for the Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program. On Wednesday, USDA forwarded the final rule of the DMC to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review.

“This is a key effort to meet that goal,” says Pro Farmer’s Jim Wiesemeyer.

Over the past few months USDA has been announcing the margin levels used to trigger payments each month.

“The program is retroactive to Jan. 1 and USDA has been under pressure to get the program operational as the US dairy industry has economically struggled,” Wiesemeyer said. “USDA previously has announced that those producers who elect a DMC coverage level of $9 and $9.50 per cwt. will be eligible for a payment for January, February and March.”
