Dairy MPP Payout Reaching Farmers

 |  By: Anna-Lisa Laca

If you’re expecting to receive a dairy Margin Protection Program payment from the May/June payout, you can expect the money to be deposited into your bank account soon.  While many farmers anticipating a payment haven’t received one yet, a farmer from Wisconsin reported their MPP payment was direct deposited to their bank account on Thursday.

USDA expects to pay farmers $11.2 million as a result of the May/June margin. While it’s the largest payout since the program started some farmers are still frustrated. One dairy farmer wrote on our Dairy Girl Network Facebook group: “Of course it's the largest payout because we've never gotten anything from it before.” Another wrote: “No payment yet! Sure would like to at least get our premium back!!”

Enrollment is currently open for the 2017 year. While lawmakers are lobbying USDA to extend the enrollment period to December 31, farmers are weighing their options. “We signed up for $6.50, so yes, will be receiving [a payment], have not yet,” wrote an Illinois dairy farmer on the Dairy Girl Network Facebook group. “[We] have to reevaluate for next year. [It’s] unlikely there will be another payment this year with current grain prices.”

Are you planning to enroll in the Margin Protection Program for next year? If yes, at what level?
