Dairy No Longer New Zealand’s Top Industry
An island long known for its milk production, the dairy industry has been New Zealand’s No. 1 economic driver for the last six years. This year, for the first time since 2010, tourism has overtaken dairy as the top industry, according to the New Zealand Herald.
Tourism didn’t beat out dairy by much despite terribly low milk prices. Over the past year tourism was 5.6% of New Zealand’s GDP contributing $12.9 billion to the economy. Dairy contributed $12.3 billion.
It’s worth noting the year before dairy contributed $14.1 billion to New Zealand’s economy.
