 |  By: Jim Dickrell

The United States Department of Agriculture reported today that 253,000 dairy cattle were slaughtered in federally inspected plants in December. On a total numbers basis, that’s down 2,400 head from December 2015.

However, there was one more processing day in December 2015 so this year’s December culling was actually up 3.7% on a daily basis. December 2016 culling was also up nearly 10,000 head over November, or about 4%.

For the year, dairy cow culling was down 1% from 2015, with a total of 2,885,700 dairy cows slaughtered.
