Does Poor Weather Impact Milk Production?
Around the world, dairy farmers faced wacky weather over the month. In the U.S. there are reports of barns collapsing under feet of snow and New Zealand is facing a tough drought. How does weather impact milk production? INTL FCStone ran the numbers and here’s what they found.
“When we ran the production models with different assumptions about the weather it wasn't surprising to see that New Zealand was the most sensitive to weather conditions,” explains Nate Donnay an analyst with FCSTone. “The models for the US/EU are probably understating the impact of weather because only temperature anomaly was used as a weather variable while the weather variable for New Zealand was a more comprehensive pasture growth index. But even the actual impact of poor weather in the US/EU is twice as large as we're estimating here, it would still pale in comparison to New Zealand.”
