Exports Set Record in March
Suppliers shipped almost 205,000 tons of milk powder, cheese, butterfat, whey and lactose during March, up 26% from March 2017. U.S. exports were valued at $510 million, 8% greater than in March 2017 and the highest total value since April 2015, according to the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC).
The export volume set a new record, surpassing the previous record high set in March 2014. USDEC says exports of whey protein concentrate and lactose each hit all-time highs.
Ingredient sales drove the gains:
- Nonfat dry milk/skim milk powder shipments to Southeast Asia were nearly double prior year level
- Sales to Mexico were the second-most ever.
- Lactose shipments to China improved by 57% during the month and were at a record high
This data shows progress toward the USDEC "Next 5%" goal of increasing exports to 20% of production in the next five years.
