Fonterra Continues Dairy Development in China
Fonterra, one of New Zealand’s largest dairy cooperatives, recently opened a new dairy operation in Ying County in Eastern China capable of milking up to 16,000 cows.
Jo Goodhew, New Zealand food safety minister, says the dairy complements other activity in the area that will boost local farming capability and the local economy. Fonterra has collaborated with the Chinese government to train more than 1,000 local farmers in modern farm management, animal breeding and disease control.
The coop currently has two farms operational and another three under development near Beijing. Earlier this year Fonterra set a goal of producing one billion liters—about 265 million gallons—of milk annually in China by 2018. This is to supply what the coop believes will be a doubling over the next eight years of Chinese consumption of dairy products.
