July Fluid Milk Sales Were Actually UP!
The United States Department of Agriculture reported that total fluid milk sales were actually up in July, mostly due to an increase in organic milk sales.
Year-to-date, fluid sales are down 1.7%. But July sales climbed 0.2%.
Organic milk sales were up 4.6%, with whole and reduced fat organic milk up 11.4% and 10.3%, respectively.
But higher fat conventional milks were up as well. Conventional whole milk was up 3.6%, and flavored whole milk was up 10.4%. The entire conventional milk category was essentially flat in July, down just 0.1%.
Fluid milk sales have been in decline since the early 2000s. Note, though, that the increase in higher fat fluid milk sales means milk fat sales are actually increasing. Between 2013 and 2017 (the latest data available), milk fat sales increased 13%.
