Low Unemployment Creates Farm Labor Pinch Point
The July jobs report showed unemployment at 3.9%. Meanwhile, job growth in July was 4%, less than most analysts expected.
The numbers suggest the economy is helping the labor market deal with issues such as trade policy, however, it’s also creating a labor shortage throughout rural America.
“There's not a domestic supply of workers sitting on the sidelines to take care of these animals and create job growth and economic prosperity in rural America,” says Dustin Baker, deputy director of economics with the National Pork Producers Council. “So, we have to have access to an adequate supply of workers in order to continue to feed the world.”
