Making Sustainability a Priority

 |  By: Mike Opperman

A Farm Journal poll shows more than half of farmers surveyed think consumer interest in sustainability will be a factor they will need to prioritize in the near future.

How soon those preferences will impact farming practices is anyone’s guess. Almost half of farmers polled said they will be impacted by consumers within the next 10 years.

How soon will your operation be affected by consumer pressure for sustainable food?

At the same time, 40% of farmers believe they already operate sustainably, 39% said there is still some work to do, and 17% said there is significant progress to be made to adopt sustainable farming practices.

Consumer preferences impact the decisions food companies make with regard to production practices.

How will you respond if food companies ask you to change practices?

Of the farmers surveyed, 20% said they would make changes to farming practices dictated by food companies. However, more than 60% said they would make some of the changes, but would push back on others.

What are your feelings about consumer interest in sustainable food?
