In its milk production report on Tuesday, USDA announced milk production continued to climb in May. Total production in the 23 major states totaled 17.9 billion pounds, which is up 0.9% from a year prior.

Milk production per cow also increased over May 2017. Cows reportedly produced 2,052 pound each in May. USDA says this is the highest per cow milk production since 2003, when they started tracking production in the 23 states series.

Cow numbers also grew last month. The number of cows on farms was 8.74 million head in May 2018, that’s 10,000 more than May 2017 and 2,000 more than last month.

Colorado reported the largest year over year change in milk production. In May they produced 11.6% more milk than they did in May 2017. Florida saw the biggest fall, decreased milk production by 5.6% since this time last year.
