Milk Production Outpaces Processing Capacity [VIDEO]

 |  By: Anna-Lisa Laca

Milk production in the U.S. has been steadily increasing. In April, USDA reported daily production up more than 1%. The flush of milk in the system is putting some dairy farmers in a bind. Kendra Lamb of Lamb Farms in New York says in her area there’s a lack of processing capacity causing issues.

“That’s put some farms in a tough spot where they don’t have a home for their milk,” she says. “They’ve had to have some tough conversations about what to do and whether to keep going.”

Farmers are reporting milking being dumped in the Northeast and Midwest this month. Tomorrow’s May Production Report from USDA should be a good indicator of how much milk output has increased.
