October Dairy Cow Culling Up 5.6%

 |  By: Jim Dickrell

Dairy farmers culled 27,200 more cows in October this year compared to last. But there was also one more business day this year, meaning culling on a per day basis was up 666 cows, or 5.6%.

The disparity in the number of business days in October 2018 compared to September 2018 also distorted the culling picture as well. The October monthly tally was up almost 41,000 head over September, but on a daily basis it was up 491 cows, a 3.7% increase.

For the year to date, dairy farmers have shipped 126,000 more cows through Federally inspected slaughter plants than last year. That’s a jump of 5.1%.
