Round 5 of NAFTA Uneventful

 |  By: Mike Opperman

In the fourth round of NAFTA negotiations the U.S. went on the offensive on a number of fronts, including demands for greater access to the Canadian dairy market. Round 5 opened this weekend in Mexico City and all indications are that this round will be much less uneventful.

Top trade officials from the three countries are not in attendance, meaning respective team members can work on the minutia of the various negotiations in addition to negotiations around less contentious areas. Regardless, there is hope that negotiators can report positive movement when they return to their respective countries later this week. It's important for progress to be seen within respective countries, given the upcoming political elections in Mexico in the spring of 2018 and the midterm elections in the U.S. later that fall.
