Time To Give MPP A Chance?
Tomorrow’s deadline to enroll in the revised Margin Protection Program means there’s just a little time left to reconsider if the changes make the program worth it for your farm.
According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, for more than 90% of the farmers previously enrolled in the program, coverage for 2018 is guaranteed to be profitable.
That’s also why National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) is encouraging producers to take another look at MPP.
“When [the program] was first implemented 4 years ago, Congress watered down some of the economic calculations used to calculate the margin between feed costs and milk prices, and a lot of people tried it the first year and then it didn’t generate any economic activity, so they walked away from it essentially,” says Chris Galen with NMPF. “So now what we need to do is say, even though it left a bad taste in your mouth the first go around, you really need to take a second look at it.”
According to Galen, NMPF is working to include other enhancements in the next farm bill that would make the program more affordable and allow for a broader range of coverage.
