Trump Delays Deportations
President Trump had requested raids of communities where undocumented families reside this past Sunday, but cancelled those raids on Saturday. In a statement he said those raids would resume if Democrats did not agree to asylum law changes, according to Jim Wiesemeyer, ProFarmer Washington analyst. .
"At the request of Democrats, I have delayed the illegal Immigration Removal Process for two weeks," Trump said in a tweet.
Immigration agents were planning to sweep into immigrant communities in 10 major cities, including Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and Houston, targeting about 2,000 families.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called Trump Friday night asking him to call off the raids, according to reports.
Before he announced the delay, Trump was defensive of the planned raids earlier Saturday morning on Twitter. He said the people ICE “apprehend have already been ordered to be deported.”
“This means that they have run from the law and run from the courts,” Trump said in the 8:30 a.m. tweet. “These are people that are supposed to go back to their home country.”
