USDA Will Purchase $68 Million Worth of Milk for Feeding Programs
In addition to direct payments to farmers under the Market Facilitation Program, the United States Department of Agriculture will also purchase $1.4 billion worth of food.
The purchases will be of products that have all been targeted by trade retaliation tariffs. Included in these purchases is $68 million worth of milk, $151 million worth of beef and $208 million worth of pork. USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service will buy these affected product in four phases, beginning Oct. 1, 2019 with deliveries beginning on Jan. 1, 2020.
The products will be distributed to states, and will be distributed through food banks and pantries, schools and other outlets serving low-income individuals such as elderly feeding programs and tribes.
