Why Is the Texas Dairy Herd Growing So Much?
Do you remember winter storm Goliath? The massive blizzard that hit New Mexico and Texas in right around January 1, 2016, could be part of the reason USDA reports Texas milk production increasing so much.
The Lone Star state boasted a 16.5% increase compared to March 2016, which was the highest increase in last week’s milk production report. According to our partners at AgDay, early estimates put dairy cow losses from the storm at 30,000 head. Since that time the Texas dairy herd has grown by almost 47,000 head.
